Atlanta home inspector goes there when others won’t or can’t

July 9, 2010 by Bonnie Lelak

During this Atlanta home inspection I was inspecting the attic in this North Atlanta home and found the following issue.  As an Atlanta home inspector, it is my job to thoroughly check all areas of the home to make sure that you don’t end up with a money pit. I have heard of Atlanta home inspectors that either don’t or can’t get all the way into the attic to inspect it.  What they do is put a latter up into the attic scuttle hole, pop their head up through the hole take a quick look around and call it inspected.  I find so many issues up in the attic when I am doing an Atlanta home inspection that I would not feel like I was doing you, my client, a thorough job, if I didn’t go all the way into the attic. Atlanta home inspector why is my electric bill so high - missing insulation The last thing you want is to have an issue like I found in this picture that would cause you financial hardship after you have closed on your dream home.  This one issue could cost you over time, by creating higher electricity bills and once you did find it, you would then be responsible for putting the attic insulation in.  Needless to say the buyers that hired me to do this North Atlanta home inspection, were very happy that I found where the home owners had added an addition onto the home and failed to have it insulated.  The sellers wondered why their electricity bill was so high.  They never dreamed that the contractor didn’t finish the job completely.  And of course they didn’t ever go up in the attic themselves.  Make sure when you’re hiring a home inspector that you get our free report ““Now You Too Can Avoid Disaster; Your Handbook to Finding and Hiring the Best Home Inspector in the Business” so that you have a free guide on the questions you need to be asking your Atlanta home inspection company.

Atlanta home inspectors funny findings

Atlanta home inspector inspect this 300x225 Atlanta home inspectors funny findings

As an Atlanta home inspector I often find funny things all the time during my Atlanta home inspections that make you ask the age old question “what we’re they thinking?”  During this Atlanta home inspection I found where the deck was built and one of the support post had a stump as the footer.  Now I’ve seen some pretty unique footing systems during my home inspection career, but this one really made me laugh.  I was able to insert my screw driver all the way into the stump with very little pressure at all.  Now hopefully most of you know why this is a problem but just incase you don’t here is the issue.  As this stump is rotting, it is allowing the post to sink, which in turn makes the deck unlevel.  Now that is not the biggest issue. The biggest issue is the strain that this puts on the items that attached this deck to the house.  In older homes they simply used nails and other items instead of lag bolts.  If that is the case here, then you’re looking for a major accident to happen once the party moves outside on the deck.  Most deck post are supported either by a poured footer or at least a concrete block.

Turn Up The Fun For the Summer

Turn up the fun and turn down the heat this summer
(ARA) – Shirt sleeves are getting shorter and the days are getting longer, which can only mean one thing – summer is just around the corner. No matter how many fun summer activities you have planned for your family, as the summer wears on, you will eventually hear two things from your children: “I’m hot” and “I’m bored.”

“Not this year!” says television personality and mom to seven children Hannah Keeley. Here are a few of Keeley’s favorite ways to keep your family entertained and the heat at bay this summer.

Go around the world. Take your family on a world tour from the comfort of your very own home. Each week throughout the summer, pick a new country to learn about as a family. Watch a documentary about the location, do some cultural research online or check out travel books from the library. At the end of the week, prepare a meal from the family’s selected country. This is also a great way to keep your kids’ brain cells firing once school is out.

Make a water park. On hot summer days, the Keeley family likes to build their very own water park – at home – using a tarp, sprinkler and their playground slide. Create your own backyard water park using items you already have at home and in your yard. Point a sprinkler at the swing set, run the hose down a slide or fill an inflatable kiddie pool. Add a few water toys such as rubber ducks, plastic cups or even water balloons and watch as your kids stay entertained for days.

Have a family slumber party. Drag out the sleeping bags, pop some corn and get the whole family involved in an all-night party. The kids will love to hear funny stories about when their parents (or grandparents) were young and you can treat your family to instant s’mores, even without a campfire. Just stick a marshmallow on top of a graham cracker and microwave it for 30 seconds. Add some chocolate, top it with another graham cracker and you’re in business.

Stay cool. Families tend to escape the heat by spending more time indoors, so it’s important to have your air conditioning system checked out now before the summer heat makes its grand entrance. If your system is on the fritz, ask your local air conditioner dealer about a new energy-efficient air conditioner. The Allegiance (R) 15 Air Conditioner by American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning can help you save up to 47 percent on your heating and cooling costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Saving money and doing something good for the environment – two great ideas to add to your family’s summer to-do list.

Quick tips for eliminating morning madness

Calling all moms: eliminate morning madness9917 B189 rgb5 Quick tips for eliminating morning madness
(Courtesy of ARA) – Every mom knows that the only thing to expect in the morning is the unexpected. Between finding time for a shower, getting the kids’ teeth brushed and keeping the dog from drinking out of the toilet, morning madness begins in the bathroom for many busy moms.  According to a recent Scrubbing Bubbles survey, 81 percent of women begin multitasking right from the start, with eight in 10 admitting to multi-tasking more now than ever before.

“As a mom of two, I know the difficulties of trying to juggle everything in the morning,” says Janice Croze, founder of 5 Minutes for Mom. “Like many women, I start my mental to-do list as soon as I step into the shower, so the last thing I want to look at is a dirty bathroom. By utilizing tools that work hard for me and employing some organizational skills, my mornings run smoother.”

Croze is partnering with Scrubbing Bubbles to offer moms a few simple tips to minimize morning madness:

* Prepare in advance – Make the extra effort to prepare lunches the night before for the kids to grab on their way out the door to school. You can also use the time to start prepping something easy for breakfast, like pancake or muffin batter.

* Turn morning hassles into nighttime fun – Picking out outfits is another night-before activity that can cut down on chaos in the morning. Try making it into a ritual after homework and before bed. If your kids are budding fashionistas, let them help choose what you’ll wear, too.

* Choose cleaning solutions that work overtime – Avoid looking around your house and adding cleaning to your worries by finding products that work harder for you. For example, new Scrubbing Bubbles Extend-A-Clean Power Sprayer has active cleaners that keep your bathroom surfaces clean for days. So, there’s one less thing on your to-do list for the day.

* De-clutter as you go – Don’t let a mess pile up in the kitchen sink after every meal. Be proactive – leave the dishwasher open and empty, directing everyone to put their dishes in when they’re done eating.

* Teamwork, teamwork, teamwork – Team up with your family members to make sure that everyone has what they need as they go out the door, from completed homework and lunch bags to gym clothes and cell phones.

Making a night-before effort, finding products that work harder for you, and staying organized will cut down on unnecessary chaos in the mornings. To find more tips to help you minimize your morning madness visit www.5minutesformom.com or www.scrubbingbubbles.com.
