Our competitors are worried about our new Promotion!  They think it is impossible,  but it’s not!

IHI Home Inspections is giving away a chance to win up to $100.00 off your home inspection cost when you book your home inspection online!

Are You Thinking…Ok David and Bonnie, What’s The Catch?

Sure you are, go ahead and admit it!  ;-)    I would be too!

But you know what, there is no catch!   That’s right; it’s straight up and here’s how it works:

David will give you a scratch off ticket that has up too $100.00 off under the sticker for the home inspection.  The best part is that it will be credited to you immediately, you will immediately get the amount off your home inspection price, no waiting, no signing up, no questions asked, no going online and jumping through hoops, no long list of terms and conditions.  It’s that simple.

The only thing that we ask is that you or your agent is there to recieve the scratch off ticket, so that when we scratch it off, you or your agent can verify the discount.

Now on another note, IHI Home Inspections is longer providing the free Gas or Groceries at this time.  We do still provide the Getaway Vacations but the provider is behind on fullfilling the gas and groceries program ( I thiink it is because of the overwhelming popularity of the program, they didn’t expect home inspectors across the US to promote it so well. They are working diligently to get caught up.)

Your home is Germier than you think, BUT HELP is on the way.

October 10, 2009 by Bonnie Lelak

So what is the most germ-ridden room in your house?

It’sHELP vegetables not the bathroom–it’s the kitchen. In fact, there could be up to 200 times more fecal bacteria on your kitchen cutting board than on your toilet seat. This is likely because people regularly disinfect their bathroom while kitchen items may be overlooked.”

According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, “germs in the home can show up where you least expect them, even if you diligently try to keep your home clean. Despite good efforts by most to keep their homes germ free, over 65 percent of colds, 50 percent of all cases of diarrhea and 50 percent to 80 percent of food-borne illnesses are caught in the home, and common household items are often to blame.

And Miranda Hitti from WebMD Health News shares that there are “More Bacteria in the Bathtub Than in the Garbage Bin!”

Bottom line: New research shows…Your home may be germier than you think!

Out of 32 places in the home, the top spots for bacteria are the toilet bowl, kitchen drain, kitchen sponge or counter-wiping cloth, bathtub, and kitchen sink., according to a new study.

The study and survey come from the Hygiene Council — which is funded by Reckitt Benckiser, the company that makes Lysol.

Researchers visited 35 U.S. homes, swabbing for bacteria in 32 locations in each home.

Here’s how those spots ranked, in terms of the average number of bacteria per square inch. Spots with the same average number of bacteria have the same rank.

  • Toilet bowl: 3.2 million bacteria/square inch
    Kitchen drain: 567,845 bacteria/square inch
    Sponge or counter-wiping cloth: 134,630 bacteria/square inch
Bathtub, near drain: 119,468 bacteria/square inch
Kitchen sink, near drain: 17,964 bacteria/square inch
Kitchen faucet handle: 13,227 bacteria/square inch
Bathroom faucet handle: 6,267 bacteria/square inch
Bathroom sink, near drain: 2,733 bacteria/square inch
Pet food dish, inside rim: 2,110 bacteria/square inch
Kitchen floor, in front of sink: 830 bacteria/square inch
Toilet floor, in front of toilet: 764 bacteria/square inch
    Kitchen countertop: 488 bacteria/square inch
    Bathroom countertop: 452 bacteria/square inch
    Garbage bin: 411 bacteria/square inch
    Dish towel: 408 bacteria/square inch
    Toy: 345 bacteria/square inch
    Kitchen tabletop: 344 bacteria/square inch
Home office phone or refrigerator door: 319 bacteria/square inch
    Toilet seat: 295 bacteria/square inch
Bathroom light switch: 217 bacteria/square inch
    Microwave buttons: 214 bacteria/square inch
Kitchen chopping board: 194 bacteria/square inch
    Child-training potty: 191 bacteria/square inch
Infant changing mat and infant high chair: 190 bacteria/square inch
    Kitchen phone: 133 bacteria/square inch
    Bathroom door’s inside handle: 121 bacteria/square inch
    Toilet’s flush handle: 83 bacteria/square inch
TV remote control: 70 bacteria/square inch
Home office computer keyboard: 64 bacteria/square inch
Home office computer mouse: 50 bacteria/square inch

And if that isn’t bad enough, another study by the National Institue for Health showed that Bacteria in Household Dust Triggers Asthma Symptoms.

New research shows that bacteria lurking in household dust produce chemicals that may trigger asthma and asthma-related symptoms such as wheezing. These bacterial chemicals, called endotoxins, particularly those found on bedroom floors, were linked with increased respiratory problems in adults.

Researchers at NIEHS and the University of Iowa found a strong association between endotoxin levels and the prevalence of diagnosed asthma, asthma symptoms, asthma medication use, and wheezing. These relationships were strongest for bedroom floor and bedding dust.

“Interestingly, endotoxin exposure worsens asthma symptoms in adults, regardless of whether an individual has allergies or not,” said Peter S. Thorne, Ph.D., a researcher at the University of Iowa and lead author on the paper. “This suggests that exposure to endotoxin increases asthma risk even in non-allergic individuals.”

Swine Flu Hits Children – We Have HELP

October 1, 2009 by Bonnie Lelak

While surfing around today, I ran across the following article talking young man and woman together uid 1432317-cropabout another child that died from the swine flu, and while it was in Texas, it may give us reason to believe that we don’t have to worry.  My sister in law lives right here in Cherokee County in the Hickory Flat area and her neighbor almost died from the Swine Flu. Why wait until it hits your home, call us to find out how you can take prevenative measures in your home that will continue to last day after day, week after week.  Swine Flu is not just hitting Texas, or people you don’t know, it’s hitting your schools and your neighborhoods.  Below is part of the article titled:  Swine Flu: When to go to the hospital.

Even tho the hospitals are saying don’t worry, how can you not when it’s your child who is now sick?

 Watch the video/news-report here

Here’s part of the article:

The Dallas health department estimates some 600,000 children are currently out of school with some type of flu.

While they stress the virus is relatively mild, six people have died from it, in North Texas.

One of them was 14-year-old Chloe Lindsay.

Doctors didn’t give her Tamiflu because she didn’t fit in the CDC’s guidelines for needing it.  Her death has many parents asking what to do if their healthy child gets sick.

It’s relatively easy for doctors to tell parents not to worry. After all, almost every child will recover from the flu.

But we’ve already seen three local children die – two of them were otherwise healthy.

That makes it critical that parents know what signs to watch for which could mean a child is in trouble.brochure-300   Continue reading the article here…

Now you’re probably wondering what all this has to do with us being an Atlanta Home Inspector, well you see, we are pleased to announce a new service/product that we will be launching.  Right now we are waiting on a shipment to come in that will include a couple more tools and we will be ready to roll.  The parent company is Healthier Environment Living Program and we are IASQ Certified Inspectors.    After all most of us are surprised to find out that our homes are germier than we think!  Call us today for more information at 404-788-2580 (Bonnie) or 404-788-2581 (David), we look forward to helping you have a healthier living environment.

XMICROBE Technology – What is it?

September 29, 2009 by Bonnie Lelak

XMICROBE™ Technologyquestion mark

The Healthier Environment Living Program™ offers a unique Disinfecting & Protecting service to reduce or completely rid the bacteria, mold and mildew that is dwelling in your home or business that you can’t see.

By blending our XMICROBE™ Microbiostatic Agent Protectant with our XMICROBE™ Neutral Disinfectant Cleaner onsite creates the XMICROBE™ Technology that we are very to proud to offer. There are no better results offered in the industry today.

The Healthier Environment Living Program™ consists of many affordable, long lasting solutions including anti-microbial protection and air & surface testing for Healthier Verifications™ performed by our Indoor Air & Surface Quality (IASQ™) Professionals.

XMICROBE™ Technology is a patented, EPA Registered revolutionary new product. XMICROBE™ Technology prevents the growth of an amazingly wide array of bacteria, mold, mildew, algae and yeast.

XMICROBE™ Technology acts like a bed of microscopic spikes that pierce the cell walls of microbes. XMICROBE™ Technology is a totally new approach to providing long lasting anti-microbial protection.

What benefit do You get from areas that are treated with XMICROBE™ Technology?

*XMICROBE™ Technology continuously fights the growth of microbes that can cause stains, odors and product degradation.
*XMICROBE™ Technology protection makes the surfaces in your business easier to clean and keeps them cleaner and fresher between cleanings.
*XMICROBE™ Technology is applied to porous and non-porous surfaces and will not wash off.
*XMICROBE™ Technology is engineered to provide continuous antimicrobial product protection for up to ninety (90) days or greater, keeping the products in your home or business cleaner and fresher for longer than ever before.
Plus the XMICROBE™ Technology is a GREENER Solution to eliminating dangerous microorganisms in your home and business.

Here’s why…

Poison (Chemicals) vs. Mechanical Elimination Of Dangerous Microorganisms

Conventional products penetrate living cells and kill by way of poisoning or chemically altering the organism. They are designed to act quickly and dissipate quickly to avoid adverse effects to humans and animals due to their toxic ingredients. (The XMICROBE™ Technology Does Not)

Most commercial antimicrobials used for treating building surfaces do a great job of getting a quick kill on bacteria and fungi, although most have a limited spectrum of effectiveness. (XMICROBE™ Technology Has A Broad Spectrum Of Effectiveness)

Heavy metal based antimicrobials, such as silver ion may leach into the environment and lose their effectiveness over time. (The XMICROBE™ Technology Is Water Based That Won’t harm The Environment)

Here’s The Big Difference…

XMICROBE™ Technology takes a totally unique approach. It provides long-term control of growth on treated surfaces because the surface itself is modified to make it antimicrobial active.

The active ingredient in the XMICROBE™ Technology forms a colorless, odorless, positively charged polymer, which chemically bonds to the treated surface. You could think of it as a layer of electrically charged swords.

When a microorganism comes in contact with the treated surface, the sword punctures the cell membrane and the electrical charge shocks the cell. Since nothing is transferred to the now dead cell, the anti-microbial doesn’t lose strength and the sword is ready for the next cell to contact it.

XMICROBE™ Technology protection continuously fights the growth of microbes. Plus, the XMICROBE™ Technology protection makes the surfaces in your home easier to clean and keeps them cleaner and fresher between cleanings.

XMICROBE™ Technology has undergone extensive independent laboratory testing and has a long 35 year history of safe use. It is registered with the EPA for all applications in which it is used.

You are invited to attend a FREE WORKSHOP to get the straight scoop on legal planning for busy parents. Come on out and learn how easy it is to make sure your kids will be taken care of by the people you want in the way you want if you are ever in an accident … and never taken into the arms of strangers.

Even if you have a Will in place, most parents have made at least one of 6 common mistakes. As a dad and a Personal Family Lawyer with special training in the legal needs of parents, I’ve got the low down on what you need to know to fix these mistakes, if you’ve made them.

I’ve rented out Pump It Up! in Marietta and arranged playtime for your kids while you learn the 9 easy legal steps you must take to ensure the well-being of your little ones.

During this informative workshop, you’ll discover how to:
• Be sure your children never spend even one moment in the care of strangers (or anyone you wouldn’t want) if anything happens to you.
• Avoid the expenses and delays of a long, drawn-out court process that would make life difficult for your loved ones if you were in an accident.
• Protect your children’s inheritance from creditors, lawsuits and failed marriages.
• Make sure your hard-earned money is immediately and privately available to your chosen guardians.
• Leave behind more than just your money.

This is a FREE event and we will be serving refreshments. Plus, your kids will have a great time with the Pump It Up! staff while you learn.

Due to the extremely limited space and popularity of this program, you must reserve your spot. First 10 families attend only. To reserve your space, simply call [masked].

This educational seminar is being presented by Personal Family Lawyer and Dad, Steve Worrall, who is a frequent speaker on life and estate planning for families.

As an added bonus, all those who attend will take home a free copy of the bestselling book “Wear Clean Underwear! A Fast, Fun, Friendly – and Essential – Guide to Legal Planning for Busy Parents.” Call to reserve your space now at [masked].

Atlanta Home Inspector shares information about Chinese Drywall

August 28, 2009 by Bonnie Lelak

As An Atlanta Home Inspector I have been asked more and more about the Chinese Drywall.  I am happy to be able to tell those that have asked me about it, that I have not ran across any of it during my Atlanta home inspections.  However I did run across the following article on my InterNachi membership website and thought it was full of valuable information.  I hope it helps with the questions you may have.

 Chinese Drywall

by Nick Gromicko, Rob London and Kenton Shepard

Amidst a wave of Chinese import scares, ranging from toxic toys to tainted pet food, reports of contaminated drywall from that country have been popping up across the American Southeast. Chinese companies use unrefined “fly ash,” a coal residue found in smokestacks in coal-fired power plants in their manufacturing process. Fly ash contains strontium sulfide, a toxic substance commonly found in fireworks. In hot and wet environments, this substance can offgas into hydrogen sulfide, carbon disulfide, and carbonyl sulfide and contaminate a home’s air supply.

The bulk of these incidents have been reported in Florida and other southern states, likely due to the high levels of heat and humidity in that region. Most of the affected homes were built during the housing boom between 2004 and 2007, especially in the wake of Hurricane Katrina when domestic building materials were in short supply. An estimated 250,000 tons of drywall were imported from China during that time period because it was cheap and plentiful. This material was used in the construction of approximately 100,000 homes in the United States, and many believe this has lead to serious health and property damage.
Although not believed to be life- threatening, exposure to high levels of airborne hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur compounds from contaminated drywall can result in the following physical ailments:

  • sore throat;
  • sinus irritation;
  • coughing;
  • wheezing;
  • headache;
  • dry or burning eyes; and/or
  • respiratory infections.

Due to this problem’s recent nature, there are currently no government or industry standards for inspecting contaminated drywall in homes. Professionals who have handled contaminated drywall in the past may know how to inspect for sulfur compounds but there are no agencies that offer certification in this form of inspection. Homeowners should beware of con artists attempting to make quick money off of this widespread scare by claiming to be licensed or certified drywall inspectors. An inspector can use the following tips to identify if a home’s drywall is contaminated:

  • The house has a strong sulfur smell reminiscent of rotten eggs.
  • Exposed copper wiring appears dark and corroded. Silver jewelry and silverware can become similarly corroded and discolored after several months of exposure.
  • A manufacturer’s label on the back of the drywall can be used to link it with manufacturers that are known to have used contaminated materials. One way to look for this is to enter the attic and remove some of the insulation.
  • Drywall samples can be sent to a lab to be tested for dangerous levels of sulfur. This is the best testing method but also the most expensive.

Contaminated Chinese drywall cannot be repaired. Affected homeowners are being forced to either suffer bad health and failing appliances due to wire corrosion or replace the drywall entirely, a procedure which can cost tens of thousands of dollars. This contamination further reduces home values in a real estate environment already plagued by crisis. Some insurance companies are refusing to pay for drywall replacement and many of their clients are facing financial ruin. Class-action lawsuits have been filed against homebuilders, suppliers, and importers of contaminated Chinese drywall. Some large manufacturers named in these lawsuits are Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin, Knauf Gips, and Taishan Gypsum.

The Florida Department of Health recently tested drywall from three Chinese manufacturers and a domestic sample and published their findings. They found “a distinct difference in drywall that was manufactured in the United States and those that were manufactured in China.” The Chinese samples contained traces of strontium sulfide and emitted a sulfur odor when exposed to moisture and intense heat, while the American sample did not. The U.S. Consumer Safety Commission is currently performing similar tests. Other tests performed by Lennar, a builder that used Chinese drywall in 80 Florida homes, and Knauf Plasterboard, a manufacturer of the drywall, came to different conclusions than the Florida Department of Health. Both found safe levels of sulfur compounds in the samples that they tested. There is currently no scientific proof that Chinese drywall is responsible for the allegations against it.

Regardless of its source, contamination of some sort is damaging property and health in the southern U.S. The media, who have publicized the issue, almost unanimously report that the blame lies with imported Chinese drywall that contains corrosive sulfur compounds originating from ash produced by Chinese coal-fired power plants. Homes affected by this contamination can suffer serious damage to the metal parts of appliances and piping and lead, potentially leading to considerable health issues. While no governing body has issued regulations regarding contaminated drywall, it is advisable that home inspectors be aware of the danger it poses and learn how to identify it.
